Overview

Dry Ridge & Verge Systems: what it is and when you need it

What it is

Ridges run along the top of a roof, and verges are the sloping edges at the gable ends. Traditionally both are bedded in mortar. A dry ridge or dry verge system replaces that mortar with mechanical fixings and purpose-made components that hold the tiles in place without relying on mortar.

Who it's for

Homeowners, landlords and commercial owners across Newcastle, Morpeth, Blyth, Sunderland and Northumberland whose ridge or verge mortar is cracking, falling out or letting tiles loosen.

When it's needed

Look for mortar pieces in gutters or on the ground, gaps under ridge tiles, rocking or missing ridge tiles, or crumbling mortar along gable edges. Exposed and coastal roofs are especially prone.

Why use a professional roofer

Ridge and verge work happens at the most exposed parts of the roof. Fixing systems need to be installed correctly to suit the roof covering. Our roofers carry out this work as part of their everyday roofing.

The cost of waiting

What happens if it's ignored

Mortar on ridges and verges takes the full force of the weather.

Loose ridge tiles

Once the mortar cracks, ridge tiles can rock and blow off in high winds.

Water at the ridge

Gaps under ridge tiles let rain get into the roof at its highest point.

Falling mortar

Pieces of mortar drop into gutters, blocking them, or onto paths below.

Exposed verge edges

Failed verge mortar leaves the edge tiles and timbers open to wind and rain.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✕Re-bedding in mortar again and again on very exposed roofs.
  • ✕Pointing over cracked mortar without removing it.
  • ✕Leaving rocking ridge tiles until a storm takes them off.
  • ✕Ignoring mortar debris in gutters.

In detail

Dry Ridge & Verge Systems explained

Dry ridge systems

A dry ridge system uses a roll of breathable material along the ridge and mechanical fixings that clip each ridge tile down to a ridge batten. It allows the roof space to ventilate at the top while keeping rain out, without depending on mortar.

Dry verge systems

A dry verge system uses interlocking caps along the gable edge that are fixed to the battens. They protect the edge tiles and the timbers beneath, and avoid the cracking and falling out that mortared verges suffer.

When dry systems make sense

Dry systems are well suited to tiled roofs and exposed locations, including coastal towns like Blyth and Lynemouth. They're often fitted during a new roof or when ridges and verges need attention anyway. We'll tell you at the survey whether they suit your roof. See our new roofs and fascias and soffits pages for related work.

FAQs

Dry Ridge & Verge Systems questions

How much does a dry ridge or verge system cost in Newcastle or Morpeth?

+

Every roof is different, so we don't publish set prices. What we do is come out, survey the roof for free and give you a clear, no-obligation quote with photos of what we found. You know the cost before any work starts, and there's no charge for the visit.

What warranty do you give?

+

Our work is backed by a warranty of up to 20 years. We'll confirm the warranty that applies to your specific job in your quote, so you know exactly what's covered before you agree to anything.

Are you available out of hours and at weekends?

+

Yes. CJroofing is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have a leak at midnight or storm damage on a Sunday, call 07861 498780 and speak to us directly.

Which areas do you cover?

+

We're based in Morpeth and cover Newcastle, Morpeth, Blyth, Ashington, Sunderland, Lynemouth, Ellington, Cramlington, Bedlington, Ponteland, Pegswood and the surrounding North East.

Is dry ridge better than mortar?

+

Dry systems avoid mortar cracking and falling out, which is why they suit exposed roofs. We'll explain whether a dry system or traditional bedding suits your roof.

Can dry ridge be fitted to my existing roof?

+

In many cases, yes. We'll check your roof covering and ridge tiles at the survey.

Why is mortar falling out of my roof?

+

Ridge and verge mortar is exposed to wind, rain and frost and cracks over time. Pieces in your gutters are a sign it's time to check.
