Overview
Chimney Repairs & Repointing: what it is and when you need it
What it is
Chimney work covers repointing (raking out old, crumbling mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar) and repairs to the stack itself, including loose or damaged brickwork and stonework, pots and the flaunching that holds them, and the flashings where the chimney meets the roof.
Who it's for
Homeowners and landlords with older properties across Morpeth, Newcastle, Pegswood, Ellington and the North East, where many homes still have their original stacks, as well as commercial buildings with chimneys.
When it's needed
Get your chimney checked if you see mortar crumbling or missing, bricks or stones that look loose, a leaning stack, cracked flaunching around the pots, or damp patches on chimney breasts and ceilings next to the stack.
Why use a professional roofer
Chimneys are the most exposed part of a roof and among the hardest to reach safely. Working on them properly needs access equipment and experience. Calvin and his teams have been doing this for over 20 years.
The cost of waiting
What happens if it's ignored
Weathered chimneys let water in quietly, and can become a safety risk.
Leaks into rooms
Water soaks through eroded mortar and runs down inside the stack, showing up as damp on chimney breasts.
Loose masonry
Bricks, stones and pots can work loose and fall onto the roof, gutters, paths or cars.
Frost damage
Wet masonry expands when it freezes, cracking bricks and pushing more mortar out every winter.
Roof damage below
Falling debris from a stack can break slates and tiles and block gutters.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✕Painting or coating a chimney instead of repointing failed joints.
- ✕Blaming condensation for damp that's actually coming from the stack.
- ✕Ignoring cracked flaunching because the pots still look fine from the ground.
- ✕Leaving a leaning stack until it becomes dangerous.

In detail
Chimney Repairs & Repointing explained
Chimney repointing
Mortar joints wear away over time from rain, wind and frost. Repointing means raking out the old mortar to a sound depth and filling the joints with fresh mortar, finished to shed water. It's one of the most effective ways to stop a chimney leaking and extend its life.
Chimney repairs
Repairs can include replacing damaged bricks or stones, re-bedding loose pots, renewing cracked flaunching (the mortar around the base of the pots), and repairing or rebuilding sections of the stack. Where the leak is at the junction with the roof, the flashings often need attention too; see our lead work page.
Older homes and commercial buildings
Many stone and brick homes across Northumberland have tall, exposed stacks that have weathered for decades. Commercial buildings can also have chimneys that need the same care. If your property is listed or in a conservation area and works need planning permission, we can handle the application or you can do it yourself.
FAQs
Chimney Repairs & Repointing questions
How much does chimney repairs cost in Newcastle or Morpeth?
+
Every roof is different, so we don't publish set prices. What we do is come out, survey the roof for free and give you a clear, no-obligation quote with photos of what we found. You know the cost before any work starts, and there's no charge for the visit.
What warranty do you give?
+
Our work is backed by a warranty of up to 20 years. We'll confirm the warranty that applies to your specific job in your quote, so you know exactly what's covered before you agree to anything.
Are you available out of hours and at weekends?
+
Yes. CJroofing is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have a leak at midnight or storm damage on a Sunday, call 07861 498780 and speak to us directly.
Which areas do you cover?
+
We're based in Morpeth and cover Newcastle, Morpeth, Blyth, Ashington, Sunderland, Lynemouth, Ellington, Cramlington, Bedlington, Ponteland, Pegswood and the surrounding North East.
How do I know if my chimney needs repointing?
+
Signs include crumbling or missing mortar, damp patches on chimney breasts, and bits of mortar in your gutters. Our survey includes close-up photos so you can see the condition.
Do you fix chimney flashings too?
+
Yes. Leaks around chimneys often come from the flashings where the stack meets the roof, and we carry out lead work as well.
Can a leaning chimney be repaired?
+
It depends on how bad it is. We'll inspect it, photograph it and explain the options, which may include partial rebuilding.
